"False is the idea of utility that sacrifices a thousand real advantages
for one imaginary
or trifling inconvenience; that would take fire from men because
it burns, and water because
one may drown in it; that has no remedy for evils except destruction.
The laws that forbid the
carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those
who are neither inclined nor
determined to commit crime." ... "Such laws make things worse for
the assaulted and better for
the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides,
for an unarmed man
may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." --Criminologist
Cesare Beccaria

mission! Two quick phone calls.
The Brady Campaign is urging members to call House Majority Leader Tom DeLay in support of renewing and "strengthening" the semi-auto ban. It is vitally important that DeLay knows that we stand firmly behind him in his efforts to prevent this from happening. In addition, House Speaker Dennis Hastert, a fairly reliable supporter of the Second Amendment (he voted against the ban in '94 and for the repeal in '96), is coming across as being a bit uncertain on the issue, having stated in a recent article that no decision has yet been made on the prospects of bringing a ban renewal bill to the House floor (in stark contrast to DeLay's complete confidence that it would not happen). Perhaps Hastert is just trying to be diplomatic, but regardless, he too needs to know how strongly the gun owners who put his party in control feel about this issue. Even if you have recent written letters to both of these House leaders, please take just a few minutes out of your day Friday to make a quick phone call to each, stating your strong opposition to the House taking up the ban for consideration. It shouldn't take more than a minute or two! You don't need to get into a whole lot of gory details... just a one or two sentence statement in support of killing the ban in the House. | D. Kill HR 124, the Handgun Licensing and Registration Act of 2003, introduced on 1/7/2003. Referred to the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security on 3/6/2003. The intent is to provide for the mandatory licensing and registration of handguns. This resolution currently has no co-sponsors, and we need to keep it that way. Contact your representatives and tell them to adamantly oppose HR 124. (This resolution apparently supercedes HR 114 from the 107th Congress and HR 3472 from the 106th Congress, also submitted by Rep. Rush Holt.) |
